Joel D. Cavanaugh joined the law firm of Palecek, McIlvaine, Hoffmann & Morse Co. in 2016. Joel graduated summa cum laude and in the top 10% of his class at the University of Akron School of Law. Upon graduation, Joel practiced in Cuyahoga County and handled a wide array of cases in the areas of Estate Planning, Trust and Estate Administration, Medicaid Planning, Real Estate, and Corporate Law.
Joel’s demeanor and personal and professional strengths are well suited for these practice areas. Joel shows an incredible attention to detail and enjoys going the extra mile to ensure that his clients' planning goals are met as closely as possible. Clients know that their estate plans have been drafted with one eye towards their future and one eye fixed on the present. Joel works with clients at all stages of estate planning, whether it is simple planning involving a Last Will and Testament and Powers of Attorney, or more complex planning, such as a revocable or testamentary trust.
In the area of Medicaid planning, Joel has expertise not often found in other firms. As a younger lawyer, Joel became immediately involved in the Medicaid Planning practice and quickly developed expertise in this complex field. While Medicaid law and the regulations that follow are incredibly difficult to navigate, Joel is able to succinctly and plainly explain the dos and don’ts of Medicaid law to help his clients develop a plan to protect most, if not all, of their assets. Joel assists clients with Crisis Planning (planning that involves the protection of assets and Medicaid qualification for an individual imminently entering a nursing facility), as well as Pre-Need Planning (planning that occurs well before an individual needs long-term care to shelter excess assets when Medicaid becomes necessary).
Joel is well-versed in the areas of Trust and Probate Administration. Families can feel overwhelmed when a loved one passes and can be confused as to what steps to take to wind up the affairs of their loved one. Joel’s ability to explain the probate and non-probate process and to assist in the administration of a loved one’s affairs can provide comfort and direction during what can be a very difficult time. No two estates or trusts are the same. Each brings its own set of challenges and issues. Joel has the experience to deal with most issues that arise during the Trust and/or Estate administration process and to help even in the most difficult situations.
In the practice areas of Corporate and Real Estate law Joel is able to work closely with each client to reach the client’s individual needs and goals. For Corporate law, this may entail establishing an LLC, Corporation, or Partnership, or facilitating more complex matters such as business transitions from one generation to another or mergers and acquisitions. For Real Estate transactions, Joel can assist you whether you need to transfer property to another party or would like to sell or buy property and need guidance through the process.
Do not hesitate to contact Joel Cavanaugh. He is always excited to counsel new clients in these practice area and enjoys discussing and solving each client’s unique legal issues.
